second floor of the east wing marked dormitory on the plan,
used to be the boarders dormitory. It is now used as a
preparation room and the boarders have been removed to
the new room in the west wing marked Dermitory and Enter-
tainment Room. The new room in the east wing marked Infir-
mary is used as a
dormitory for the orphans who have been
removed from the top floor of the building in the Cathedral
Compound now occupied entirely by the Chinese Division.
The remaining rooms in the new part of this wing are used
as bedrooms for some of thr larger boys and rooms for
teachers.
I think therefore that the Manager of
St. Joseph's College cannot complain if the Government
takes the cost of the additional storey on the east wing
as the basis on which to calculate the grant, The cost of
this wing may be estimated as $ 4,500, as the two wings ape
pear to be built on the same plan, and the Government is
therefore now asked to make a grant of say $2,250.
In my previous letter I spoke of St.
Joseph's College as being practically a day school for
Portuguese. The present additions will however benefit the
orphans, whose dormitory is now brought under the same roof
as the class rooms and the dining room, and the Chinese
and will only incidentally benefit the day school for
Portuguese by relieving it of Chinese to whom the Manager
found it previously impossible to refuse admission.
